Heroes – October 2009

We usually think of heroes as someone who saves a person from a burning building, or a comrade on the battlefield. People who rescue others from auto crashes are also heroes. But, there are heroes that we don’t realize are out there, and many of them are kids. Yes, kids.

If a boy or girl comes to the aid of a student that is being bullied, drawing attention to the act so that the perpetrator can be punished is a hero. If a student helps an elderly person to cross the street, or perhaps reaches for something in a store for a person in a wheelchair than can’t reach it themselves, I think they are heroes. They are stepping forward to the aid of another person without being asked or expected to. They are considerate and kind thinking of others before themselves. How many grownups go out of their way for others?

There are many young people that do good deeds without telling anyone else, just because they have a heart to reach out to others. There are kids that help others with their homework, run errands for neighbors, and even read to the elderly in nursing homes or hospitals. Many of these kids help at home too, with helping to watch their younger siblings, and pitching in to help Mom or Dad with chores around the house without complaining. I think these young people are heroes; to me they are anyway. I believe it displays a character that is growing into a special young man or woman, and I wish we had more of them.

We hear so much of the wrong things that kids do, and the trouble they get into or cause, but we never hear about all of the good things young people do. So, as a tribute to our youth, I want to give a bit of praise for all of the young that go out of their way to help someone else. I wish them all the best as they embark on another school year. Good Luck!
