Advice – June 2010

Dear Sal,
My brother-in-law has been out of work for 2 ½ years and has been getting unemployment. He had been employed previously for 25 years as parts man at a trucking company. When he got laid off, he has over the past few years searched for another parts man job. He hasn’t found one, and now his unemployment has run its course and ran out. He says he doesn’t want a different kind of job. He hates change and says “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” He is no longer bringing any money into his home, and his live-in girlfriend is now paying the bills. I know he is very worried. What should he do?

Dear Concerned,
With this struggling economy that we are living in, your brother-in-law, even though he is not comfortable with change, has to take the plunge. He needs to start looking for any kind of work now. When times get better, then he can go back to his original line of work. Staying out of work, no income, and allowing his girlfriend to pay all the bills, is going to damage his self-esteem. It’s time for this old dog to learn new tricks. I wish him luck, I know it is very tough right now.
Sal
