Advice – June 2009

Dear Sal,

I was just laid off! I have always worked, and so I am really stressed and freaking out! With this economy, I don’t know if I can find another job. This came out of the blue and was totally unexpected. I don’t know what to do next. I was paid my last check, but after I deposited it, I realized I was not even paid my vacation time. What do I do first?

Unemployed and Terrified

Dear Unemployed and Terrified,

First, calm down, and realize you are not alone. Many are experiencing what you are going through right now. Being laid off because of the economy is not being fired. Next, go online and apply for unemployment so you will have money coming in. Call your ex-boss and request a letter of recommendation to aid you in finding another job. Your previous employer should be happy to do this. Acquire this letter first before you confront him about your vacation pay. Then I would email or call him requesting your vacation pay. If you have any documentation regarding your vacation pay, I would highlight that information and send that with your request. If your employer does not honor your contract, then contact the Labor Board immediately. Start looking online for jobs, network with friends and family for job opportunities, and create a new resume. Good luck, you will get through this!

Dear Sal,

Yikes! This is the worst confession ever, and I am writing this most of all to get a burden lifted.  My neighbor has the most annoying dog in the entire world. Whenever they are away in the evening, the dog barks non-stop. Last time this happened, it went on from seven in the evening until three in the morning. The dog also goes out of his way to lift its leg on everything in my yard and driveway. This little pest has the nerve to run toward me in a threatening manner barking whenever he gets the opportunity, regardless of the fact I am in my yard! When I was leaving my driveway last weekend, this canine hoodlum was running up behind my car, and I ran over him.  The owners were out so I buried his remains and have said nothing. In short, I feel the neighborhood has had an upgrade by this tragic event. Should I feel remorse?  Do I need to tell the owners?
Silence is Golden

Dear Silence,

I found your email rather chilling. The owners of the dog were extremely irresponsible in letting their pet run free. That is a dangerous situation for neighbors and obviously for the pet also. If you cannot bring yourself to tell your neighbors perhaps an anonymous note in the mail telling of their pets demise and your sorrow for the accident. This can give their family closure.
